Nutrition Supplements - Can You Get Nutrition in a Pill?

I am often asked about different dietary supplements in my counseling practice and wanted to offer some general information about their use.

Here are some guidelines to take into account:
  • Dietary Supplements are never meant to be substitutes for good nutrition. Rather, they can compliment a diet to round out areas where foods and their nutrients are lacking.
  • If you can't or don't eat a variety of healthy foods, you may need a  dietary supplement.
  • Vitamins and minerals are substances your body needs in small but steady amounts for normal growth, function and health. Together, vitamins and minerals are called micronutrients. Your body can't make most micronutrients, so you must get them from the foods you eat or, in some cases, from dietary supplements.
  • Always discuss with your doctor any supplements you are considering adding to your diet to avoid any negative drug-nutrient interactions.
  • Check supplement labels - Read labels carefully. Product labels can tell you what the active ingredient or ingredients are, which nutrients are included, the serving size — for example, capsule, packet or teaspoonful — and the amount of nutrients in each serving.
  • Look for expiration dates. If a product does not have one, do not buy it. Store all supplements in a cool, dry place so they do not lose potency.
  • Store supplements out of sight and away from children.

Nutrition Advantage can help to determine any areas that your diet may be lacking in nutrients by performing a nutrition assessment. This can help you determine what supplements you might want to consider.
